Frozen in the place I hide

Not afraid to paint my sky…

Little lettering piece for the song Brother by Alice in Chains. Not sure how this came to be. I knew I wanted this to be raw in the same vein as my previous post for the song “seasons” by Chris Cornell but I also didn’t want to make a repeat. I made the lettering weeks ago but didn’t know what the final would look like. I played around with some brushes then started to animate. I think that’s when I went into autopilot and this happened. Unconsciously I painted my sky.

Sometimes some songs hit way too hard. Released back in 1992, this song was written by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell. Lyrics say :

Frozen in the place I hide
Not afraid to paint my sky
With some who say I've lost my mind
Brother try and hope to find

You were always so far away
I know that pain
So don't you run away like you used to do

Roses in a vase of white
Bloodied by the thorns beside the leaves
That fall because my hand is pulling them hard as I can

You were always so far away
I know that pain
And I won't run away like I used to do

Pictures in a box at home
Yellowing and green with mold
So I can barely see your face
Wonder how that color taste

You were always so far away
I know the way
So don't you run away like you used to do
Like you used to do

Coming back unplugged...

It’s been a little over a year since I last posted. It’s been busy and good, but very hard to put something personal out there... At the moment I’m working on a lettering sketch for an Alice in Chains song, to be posted soon. This is also a work in progress frame of what will eventually become a short concert. Reference taken from the Alice in Chains unplugged MTV concert. I was born in ‘93 so I could not attend the actual concert :( but I’m here now and get to relive something in my mind.

Layne, Sean, Mike and Jerry coming soon <3

Looking back and looking forward

Here is an oldie but a goodie. These are some of the lyrics for the song “Vasoline” by the Stone Temple Pilots.

This was a fun poster to work on, made back in 2016. I was a junior in college during that year and the feelings were strong. Feelings are strong right now too, like something amazing is about to happen. I have to hold on tight.

There's a light...

a certain kind of light…

Here is to 2021

Here is an update, 01/28/2021 10:42pm

what a beautiful song.

I feel like I’ve heard this song before in my dreams but I didn’t actually hear it in real life until I saw the documentary last year. Always liked certain songs from them, like the most popular ones, but never really got a chance to listen to their whole catalogue until recently. Every once in a while I get obsessed with certain bands, and the Bee Gees are no exception. I was afraid to do this because I didn’t know if I would make it justice but here it goes, a quick mock-up of what will hopefully be something soon.

Also, don’t let me get started on Andy Gibb…

Queen

Sometimes when I watch interviews with Queen, it makes me wish I was in the room with them. I sometimes wish I could have been alive in the 80's just to see Freddie Live but I'll settle for the guys still touring the world. Here's to the Princes of the Universe.

I'm in love...

with the world...

Today was just one of those days where I had to stay positive, nothing good comes out of stressing, except maybe doodles!

Either/Or is an album that I listened to non-stop while in high school and I remember I loved it so much that I wanted to get a tattoo of it on my forearm... Not that I would have regretted it if I did get it done but perhaps it would have brought back those pesky high school memories some try to forget. (I'm pointing at myself! :P)

Ain't No Way!!!

WOAH, just jumped from 80's tunes to the amazing Foo Fighters! Originally was planning to do a doodle for another Foo song but the drive for this song just took over me. Will totally start on the other doodle soon enough.

D.O.A. by the Foo Fighters. :D

And his thoughts...

Sometimes a song just hits you when you least expect it right? You think you're doing fine and dandy and then BAM! You find yourself singing to lyrics you've never heard before. Then you stop to realize you're singing about your life...

And his thoughts are full of strangers
And his eyes to numb to see
And nothing that he knows of
And nowhere where he's been
Was ever quite like this

Train of Thought by A-ha is one of those songs that just gets you with its catchy tune and relatable lyrics. I think we've all hit a moment in our lives when we suddenly stop, breathe and realize that we've never lived this moment before, every second is something new.

Anyways, here is a doodle for the song. The lyrics for the song were inspired by Knut Hamsun, Fyodor Doestoevsky and Gunvor Hofmo,

Wo ist David Bowie?

In Berlin!

I've always been driven by music and David Bowie's music and voice has been a guidance to me over the years. Most especifically, the music he made during his stay in Berlin in 1977. This is the beginning of an infographic in tribute to the late musician. Bowie isn't gone, he's back in Berlin!

Series and ideas

I'm so thankful for tv series and documentaries!!

There are certain words that trigger ideas and sentences are even more helpful! Just last week I was listening and watching (more like taking a glimpse here or there) to Dark a German series on Netflix. It has to do with time travel and the question of Determinism. I forget which character brings this word up but it made me think, if I didn't know what Determinism meant, would I be able to give a definition for it? Then I started to think that its meaning depends on the context it's presented in. If it's subjective, then determinism could mean one's eagerness and willingness to commit and succeed. In the context of time travel the meaning changes. In this context, determinism means that if someone travels to the past and changes history, determinism will prevent any change to affect the present or future, in other words...the butterfly effect is moo...like a moo point, a cow's opinion, moo, nada, zero! it's moo. It's getting hard to recognize!

Another night doodle! Got carried away with this one because I really enjoy listening to this song by Nine Inch Nails from their latest album Bad Witch.  This is a gif and so it goes faster than the actual song but I'm currently working on a short lyric video for this section.  Anyway, if you ever get the chance, please listen to this song, it's really great, it's called Shit Mirror.

Words written, scanned and traced in Illustrator.

Got nothing for me...

Guns N' Roses was a band I grew up listening to, among many others, and this song came to me in a dream, as weird as it may sound. Or I probably heard similar notes from a movie and I quickly connected it to this song unconsciously and that's why I dreamt about it.... Anyway, I've been on a GNR binge the past few hours.

I consider this doodling or sketching because it was me playing around with After Affects and the stroke effect. I looked up tutorials on Youtube and the process was simple however what I didn't anticipate was that the thickness of the letters in my doodle would overlap with other letters and so I had to go into Photoshop and erase overlaps frame by frame. All good though...

You know me, Beam me up!

Night Doodles, the beginning?

Today I spent the day fixing projects and paying close attention to tiny details. So much so that I needed to purge all the "messiness" out of me. I've had this quote "Beam me up Scotty" said by Steve Buscemi's <3 character in Armageddon and I always wanted to do something with it. Well, a few hours ago I was watching an episode of FRIENDS and it just so happened that Chandler read "Beam me up Jesus" from a bumper sticker in Phoebe's Taxi. The only relation they have is that they both start with Beam me up and that's about it... Anyway, this doodle was fun and I hope to make it into a series called "Night Doodles" in where I purge all my messiness into doodles. :D

Buckley Bars

Buckley Bars is a series of chocolate bars inspired and named after some of the songs by the late musician Jeff Buckley. It all started back in 2014 when I came across his music and his lyrics. It was a single note from the song Last Goodbye that brought me shivers and goosebumps in a beautiful way... in other words, it made me feel all the feels. <3

I've listened to every live version, every recording, pretty much anything I could find and it left me wanting more. Since then it's been in the back of my mind for me to find a way to experience his songs in different ways. I can listen to it, I can feel it, but what about tasting it? Sure, it seems kind of weird to want to taste songs but why not? It sounded like a great challenge and I was pumped to start it. I made a list of all the foods that made me feel love, made me feel happy, sad, nostalgic, melancholic and perhaps even angry but they were all separate items and then it hit me... chocolate!  I'm no WIlly Wonka but I think the flavors I chose are close to the real thing.
